Grade 3 Tech Skills

Chromebook Kickoff:
Third Graders Get Started!

⌛Read Time: 3 minutes

Chromebooks are an important part of learning in our classrooms, and getting comfortable with a new device is the first step! Our third graders have been learning the basics of using their Chromebooks, building the skills they need to work more independently and confidently throughout the school year.

Learning the Basics

Our third graders practiced using the trackpad and keyboard to navigate their Chromebooks. They learned how to move the cursor, click, scroll, and type, along with helpful keyboard shortcuts and other Chromebook tips. We also explored the basics of navigating the screen and using common keys to make everyday tasks easier.

These foundational skills help students become more comfortable using their devices and prepare them for future classroom projects and activities.

Creating, Not Just Consuming

At our school, we want students to use technology for more than watching videos or viewing information. We encourage them to create, design, communicate, and share their learning using digital tools. As third graders become more comfortable with their Chromebooks, they can use them to create presentations, design projects, write stories, and demonstrate their understanding in new ways.

Learning the basics now gives students the confidence and skills they need to become active creators rather than just consumers of technology.

Keep Practicing at Home!

The more students practice, the more comfortable they become! Families can encourage children to practice typing and using the trackpad at home. Don't forget that students can access Typetastic, our keyboarding practice program, from home through our school Clever portal.

Learning the basics today helps our third graders become confident digital learners and creators tomorrow!

Massachusetts DLCS Standards

These introductory Chromebook lessons support the Massachusetts Digital Literacy and Computer Science (DLCS) Framework, particularly the grades 3–5 Computing Systems (CS) strand:
3–5.CS.a.2: Computing Devices — Describe the purpose and function of input and output devices, including keyboards and screens.
3–5.CS.a.3: Computing Devices — Demonstrate proficiency when using computing devices.
3–5.CS.a.4: Computing Devices — Identify and solve simple hardware and software problems during everyday use.
These standards help students develop the foundational skills needed to use digital tools effectively in their learning.
