Creating with Technology



Creating, Not Consuming
A Year of Purposeful Technology Integration

This school year, technology integration across grades 3–6 continued to focus on purposeful creation, communication, computational thinking, and digital citizenship. As the Digital Learning Specialist, I collaborate with classroom teachers to design and co-teach lessons that integrate meaningful technology experiences into classroom learning.

 


 


Students explored a wide range of digital literacy and computer science topics throughout the year, including online safety, digital footprints, privacy, plagiarism, misinformation, deepfakes, AI literacy, responsible technology use, and device distraction.

Students also engaged in computational thinking and coding experiences through Scratch, Sphero, Lego WeDo, Makey Makey, Hour of Code, and Hour of AI activities.



Using Chromebooks within our Google for Education environment, students regularly created and collaborated using Google apps, Canva, WeVideo, and Book Creator. These tools supported authentic student creation through multimedia presentations, digital publishing, coding projects, video production, and collaborative design experiences.

Canva played an especially significant role in supporting graphic design and visual communication skills across grade levels. Students created infographics, posters, awareness campaigns, and presentations connected to classroom curriculum while exploring design principles such as layout, typography, visual hierarchy, color, and audience awareness.



Throughout the year, students were guided by essential technology questions such as:

How can technology support creativity and communication?
What responsibilities do we have as digital citizens?
How can we evaluate the reliability of digital information?
How can computational thinking support problem-solving?
How do design choices influence communication and audience understanding?

These experiences align closely with the Massachusetts DLCS Standards, particularly within the strands of Computing and Society, Digital Tools and Collaboration, Computing Systems, and Computational Thinking.

Across the learning year, technology experiences emphasized creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking in all content areas. Whether students were coding in Scratch, designing projects in Canva, producing green screen videos, or examining topics such as misinformation, deepfakes, and responsible digital citizenship, digital tools were used to support authentic learning, creative expression, and thoughtful problem-solving.

Building Computers




Tiny Museums That Speak Volumes
Grade 6

What happens when you combine history, creativity, and a little bit of circuitry? You get a Tiny Museum that doesn’t just sit quietly—it talks back.

Sixth graders recently brought Central Asia to life in a hands-on, interactive way using Makey Makey and Scratch. Their mission: design and build miniature museum exhibits that teach visitors through mini displays and interactive touch features. The result? A classroom full of exhibits that turned simple displays into immersive, audio-guided experiences.

From Static Displays to Interactive Experiences

Students began by researching key aspects of Central Asia—geography, culture, the Silk Road, and individual countries. But instead of stopping at posters or slideshows, they were asked to think like museum designers:
How can we make learning interactive?

Using Makey Makey, exhibits were transformed into touch-sensitive triggers. By connecting conductive materials (like foil) to specific keys, each section of their museum became a “button” that activated a recorded voiceover.

Visitors didn’t just look at the exhibits—they touched them to hear student-created audio narrations, turning each display into a mini guided tour.

Coding + Circuits in Action

Behind the scenes, Scratch was used to program their projects. Each interactive element was coded using simple event-based programming:

When a key is pressed → play a specific audio recording

Makey Makey acted as the bridge between the physical and digital worlds. When a visitor touched part of the exhibit while holding the “Earth” connection, it completed a circuit—triggering the corresponding sound in Scratch.

This hands-on setup demonstrated how:  Hardware (Makey Makey), Software (Scratch)
and user interaction all work together in a real system.

Museum-Worthy Voiceovers

Each group created five unique audio clips to match their interactive pieces. These “museum room voiceovers” included:
Overviews of Central Asia
Descriptions of geographic features
Explanations of the Silk Road
Cultural highlights and artifacts

Students practiced writing concise scripts, recording clearly, and revising their work—blending digital literacy with communication skills.

A Museum Experience to Remember

By the end of the project, students weren’t just learners—they were designers, engineers, and storytellers.
Their Tiny Museums proved that with the right tools, even a simple touch can unlock powerful learning.

Digital Literacy




Sixth Graders on the Case!


Is that website telling the truth… or pulling a trick?

Our sixth graders recently stepped into the role of digital detectives during a lesson called Truth or Trick: Investigating Online Media. Armed with critical thinking skills and a healthy dose of skepticism, students set out to uncover whether online sources were credible—or cleverly disguised misinformation.

The Case File: Online Media

In today’s world, information travels fast. With just one click, students can access news articles, blogs, videos, and social media posts from around the globe. But not everything online is accurate, reliable, or created with good intentions.

During this lesson, students were presented with a variety of websites and online articles. Their mission?
Examine each one closely and determine:
Who created this content?
What is the purpose?
Is there evidence to support the claims?
Can the information be verified elsewhere?

Using a digital detective checklist, students analyzed author credentials, publication dates, domain names, bias, tone, and supporting evidence. They looked for red flags—sensational headlines, lack of sources, exaggerated claims—and searched for clues that signaled credibility.

Following the Digital Footprints

Like true investigators, students learned that credible sources often:
Clearly identify an author or organization
Provide evidence and cite reliable references
Present balanced information
Are current and updated

Meanwhile, questionable sources sometimes:
Use emotional or extreme language
Lack author information
Include suspicious links or ads
Provide no evidence to support big claims

Students quickly realized that being a responsible digital citizen means more than just consuming information—it means questioning it.

Building Smart, Skeptical Thinkers

This lesson wasn’t just about spotting fake websites. It was about empowering students to slow down, think critically, and avoid being misled. In a world filled with viral posts and persuasive media, the ability to investigate before believing is a powerful skill.

By the end of the lesson, our sixth-grade detectives confidently cracked the case—knowing that not everything online is what it seems.

Case closed… for now. 🕵️‍♀️💻

Digital Literacy




“Copy That?”
Sixth Graders Learn About Plagiarism and Citing Sources





Our 6th graders recently explored what it means to be responsible digital citizens. In a hands-on lesson, students learned about plagiarism, citing sources, and the importance of giving credit to the creators of content they use.

Through engaging activities, students practiced paraphrasing information, adding citations, and discussing how online actions can impact themselves and others. They also reflected on how to use technology ethically, including respecting others’ work and creating their own original projects.

By the end of the lesson, students could confidently answer questions like:
What is plagiarism, and why is it wrong?
How do I give credit for information or images I use?
How can I be an honest, responsible digital citizen online?

This lesson helps students build a foundation for academic integrity and ethical digital behavior as they continue to create and explore in an online world.

Computer Science Education Week 2025


May the Code Be With You: The Droids Strike Back


In celebration of Computer Science Education Week (December 8–12, 2025), Spofford Pond Elementary School students participated in the Hour of AI, a new twist on the traditional Hour of Code. The Hour of AI is part of a global initiative that introduces students not only to coding but also to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI), helping them understand how AI works and its impact on the world around them.

Throughout the week, each student dedicated an hour to exploring activities from our Hour of Code Choice Board. They solved coding puzzles, practiced logical thinking, and gained hands-on experience with programming concepts. Additionally, students learned about AI, including how computers can “learn” from data, recognize patterns, and make decisions. This exploration encouraged curiosity about the role of technology in daily life and the ethical considerations surrounding AI.

The week unfolded with excitement as students tackled challenges, collaborated with classmates, and reflected on the ways technology shapes our world. 

Essential Questions Explored:

How do computers solve problems and make decisions?
What is artificial intelligence, and how is it used in everyday life?
How can learning coding and AI skills prepare me for the future?

Events like the Hour of AI inspire students to think critically, analyze problems, and develop skills that go beyond the computer screen. By introducing AI alongside coding, Spofford Pond students gained a deeper understanding of technology and its possibilities, laying the groundwork for future careers in programming, AI, and other tech-driven fields.

In today's digital age, technology plays a vital role in education, making learning more interactive and engaging for students. Canva, a user-friendly graphic design tool, offers sixth-grade students a creative way to understand complex topics like the human body systems.

DC Ambassadors


6th Graders Become
Digital Citizenship Ambassadors



Recently, all grade six students completed their work in Spofford Pond School's Digital Citizenship Ambassador program.  Throughout the school year, sixth graders embarked on a transformative journey covering essential topics such as:

Media Balance & Well-Being: Students learned to maintain a healthy balance between online and offline activities, prioritizing well-being amidst digital immersion.
Privacy & Security: Understanding the importance of safeguarding personal information and implementing strategies for online security.
Digital Footprint & Identity: Exploring the concept of digital footprint and cultivating a positive online identity aligned with personal values.
Relationships & Communication: Developing empathy-driven communication skills to foster healthy relationships in both digital and real-world settings.
Cyberbullying, Digital Drama: Recognizing the signs of cyberbullying and promoting a culture of kindness and empathy to combat digital conflicts.
News & Media Literacy: Enhancing critical thinking skills to evaluate online information, distinguishing credible sources from misinformation.

Upon completing the course, these sixth graders didn't just acquire knowledge—they became champions of digital citizenship. As a testament to their dedication and commitment, each student was honored with the title of Digital Citizenship Ambassador. To commemorate their achievement, each class received a digital badge to be printed and displayed in their classrooms.



These badges not only symbolize their newfound expertise but also serve as a reminder of their responsibility to uphold the principles of digital citizenship in their online interactions. As they embark on their digital journeys, these ambassadors will continue to lead by example, promoting a culture of digital respect and responsibility within their communities.

In a world where the digital landscape is ever-evolving, nurturing responsible digital citizens is more important than ever. Through initiatives like this digital citizenship course, we're not just preparing students for the future—we're empowering them to shape it for the better.

Digital Citizenship




Digital Detectives and Online Peacekeepers:
Teaching Digital Citizenship in Grade 6



As a digital learning specialist, I’m always looking for ways to make digital citizenship lessons meaningful, age-appropriate, and (let’s be honest) a little fun. Recently, I had the opportunity to work with a group of sixth graders on two essential topics in their digital lives: website credibility and digital drama.


Our sessions were built around two interactive experiences:
🔍 “Fact Files: The Case of the Untrustworthy Website” and
💬 “Digital Drama: STRATEGIES for Dealing with It.”

🔍Fact Files: The Case of the Untrustworthy Website
In this activity, students became digital detectives, exploring suspicious-looking websites and identifying red flags. We zoomed in on things like unusual domain names, unreliable authorship, lack of citations, and strange or exaggerated content. Students collaborated in small teams to analyze sample websites and fill out a "Fact File" report to determine if the site was credible, partially credible, or totally untrustworthy.

One of the biggest “aha!” moments? Realizing that just because something looks polished doesn't mean it's true—and that even fake websites can have ads, clickable links, and slick design.

💬 Digital Drama: STRATEGIES for Dealing with It
Middle school is no stranger to conflict, and online spaces can sometimes amplify that. In our digital drama session, students explored different scenarios that might unfold via texting, gaming chats, or social media—everything from exclusion in group messages to “sub-tweeting” and rumors.

Using the acronym STRATEGIES (S: Stop and breathe, T: Talk to a trusted adult, R: Reflect, etc.), students practiced how to respond to drama in thoughtful, emotionally intelligent ways. We used real-world examples and even role-played a few scenarios, which opened up honest conversations about empathy, boundaries, and when to log off.

Teaching digital citizenship isn’t a one-time lesson—it’s a mindset we build over time. With sixth grade, these two lessons helped lay a strong foundation for critical thinking, emotional awareness, and healthy digital habits. And the best part? Watching students begin to own their role as responsible digital citizens.

Standards Covered (MA Digital Literacy and Computer Science)
Digital Tools: Demonstrate ability to navigate a virtual environment, including evaluating websites for credibility and identifying advertising and bias.

Safety and Security: Demonstrate an understanding of how to protect personal information and recognize digital red flags.  Explain the consequences of inappropriate online behavior and strategies to handle cyberbullying or online conflict.

Computing and Society: Evaluate the positive and negative impact of technology on relationships, including how to manage online interactions.  Describe appropriate and ethical behavior online and explain how to act respectfully in a variety of digital settings.

How can I tell if the information I find online is trustworthy?
What are healthy and respectful ways to respond to digital drama?
How do my actions online affect others—and myself—in the real world?

Digital Citizenship


Building Smart Digital Citizens:
How Sixth Graders Are Navigating Online Safety and Responsibility



As our world becomes increasingly digital, it’s essential for students to develop strong digital citizenship skills. In sixth grade, students are exploring four key topics: chatting safely online, slowing down to pause and think, understanding digital footprints, and finding credible news or information. Through engaging discussions, interactive activities, and digital games, students are learning how to be responsible and savvy digital citizens.

Chatting Safely Online with Friends
With so many platforms for communication, from online games to social media and messaging apps, understanding how to chat safely is a critical skill. Students discussed strategies like keeping personal information private, recognizing red flags in conversations, and using respectful language in all digital interactions. They also explored real-world scenarios, learning how to identify potential online risks and how to respond appropriately.

Slow Down, Pause & Think
In a fast-paced digital world, impulsivity can lead to misunderstandings, misinformation, or even online conflict. Students practiced strategies to pause and think before reacting to a message, posting a comment, or sharing content. They analyzed case studies where quick reactions led to unintended consequences, reinforcing the importance of mindful decision-making in digital spaces.

Digital Footprints: What We Post Matters
Every online action leaves a trace, and students examined how their digital footprints shape their online reputation. They reflected on how posts, comments, and even deleted content can impact future opportunities. By exploring examples of both positive and negative digital footprints, students gained a deeper understanding of the lasting effects of their online choices.

Finding Credible News and Information
With misinformation spreading easily online, students learned how to evaluate sources critically. They practiced using fact-checking websites, identifying bias, and looking for reliable indicators like author credentials and publication sources. Through hands-on activities, students developed essential research skills to help them navigate the vast amount of information available online.

Gamifying Digital Citizenship
To reinforce these lessons, students engaged in interactive digital games like Blooket, Quizlet Live, and "Two Truths & One Lie." These games challenged students to test their knowledge in a fun, competitive way. In "Two Truths & One Lie," for example, students created statements about digital footprints or online safety, and their peers had to determine which one was false. These activities not only strengthened understanding but also encouraged collaboration and discussion, making digital citizenship an exciting and memorable experience.

By combining meaningful discussions, real-life applications, and engaging activities, our sixth graders are building the skills they need to be responsible, thoughtful, and informed digital citizens.

Publishing Online


We Are Bloggers!



Students in Ms. Sierpina's and Ms. Magee's grade 6 classes are blogging! First, we spent time discussing blogging and writing for an audience outside of school. Then each student setup a blog using Google Sites. Students learned to set permissions, comments, layout, theme, format, and sharing and then published their blogs on the internet. They created forms to collect and display feedback from viewers.


In today's digital age, the ability to express oneself effectively online is a crucial skill. As educators, it's our responsibility to equip students with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. One powerful way to do this is by introducing blogging into the curriculum, even as early as sixth grade.

Why Sixth Grade?
Sixth grade marks a significant transitional period in a student's academic journey. It's a time when children are becoming more independent thinkers and are eager to explore their interests beyond the confines of the classroom. Introducing them to blogging at this stage not only capitalizes on their natural curiosity but also lays the foundation for strong communication skills that will serve them well in the future.

The Importance of Blogging
Writing Proficiency: Blogging provides students with a platform to practice and improve their writing skills in a real-world context. By crafting blog posts on topics they're passionate about, they learn to articulate their thoughts clearly and persuasively, honing essential communication skills that are vital in both academic and professional settings.

Digital Literacy: In today's digital landscape, being able to navigate and contribute to online spaces responsibly is more important than ever. Through blogging, students learn about online etiquette, digital citizenship, and how to critically evaluate information—a skill set that's essential for success in the digital age.

Authentic Audience: Unlike traditional classroom assignments that may only be seen by the teacher, blogging offers students the opportunity to share their ideas with a larger audience. Knowing that their words have the potential to reach beyond the classroom motivates students to take ownership of their learning and produce work of a higher caliber.

Self-Expression and Creativity: Blogging allows students to express themselves in a way that's unique to them. Whether they're writing about their hobbies, sharing personal experiences, or advocating for causes they believe in, blogging empowers students to find their voice and share it with the world.

Critical Thinking and Reflection: Blogging encourages students to think critically about the topics they're writing about and reflect on their own learning process. By engaging in meaningful discussions with their peers through comments and feedback, students deepen their understanding of the subject matter and develop valuable critical thinking skills.

Introducing sixth grade students to the world of blogging is more than just teaching them how to write online it's about empowering them to become confident communicators, responsible digital citizens, and lifelong learners. By providing them with the tools and guidance they need to succeed in the digital age, we're preparing them for a future where effective communication and digital literacy are essential skills for success.

A Journey through Sixth Grade Digital Citizenship Education




In an era where screens dominate our daily lives, the importance of teaching digital citizenship to young students cannot be overstated. As sixth-grade students embark on their academic journey, educators recognize the necessity of equipping them with the skills and knowledge to navigate the digital landscape responsibly.

The Digital Landscape:
The digital landscape has become an integral part of our lives, transforming the way we communicate, learn, and socialize. Sixth-grade students are at a crucial developmental stage where they are exploring their identities and forming habits that will shape their future behaviors. As they navigate the digital world, they encounter a plethora of information, diverse perspectives, and various forms of media.

Digital Citizenship in Sixth Grade:
Digital citizenship education for sixth-grade students goes beyond mere technical skills. It encompasses a holistic approach that includes understanding online etiquette, respecting intellectual property, and critically evaluating information. Students are introduced to the concept of responsible online behavior, fostering a sense of respect and empathy for their digital peers.
